An impressive fusion of a timepiece with a piece of clothing.
Tell anyone about a watch integrated into a glove, and chances are the first thing that'll come to their mind will be smart models from the realm of high-tech clothing. But this time we're actually talking about the traditional timepiece that’s been around for centuries. Now it’s been installed in a fingerless mitten sprinkled with diamonds.
The accessory is similar to an arm warmer with just one opening for the thumb. Cartier Clash [Un]Limited Baignoire Mitten is an unconventional rendition of the Baignoire timepiece created by Louis Cartier in 1906. The story goes that the watch with its oval case was made upon request for a client from Russia.
Cartier's clients at the time included Prince Felix Yusupov and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, otherwise known as Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The watch was named after its shape: baignoire (Fr. "bathtub"). The elongated version known as the Baignoire Allongée was unveiled later in 1957.
The elongated version is the one used in the Clash [Un]Limited jewelry collection. The series includes punk-leaning jewelry with all the essential spikes. It was only a matter of days before Lily Collins (daughter of Phil Collins) appeared wearing the jewelry in an energetic video.
The Cartier Clash [Un]Limited Baignoire Mitten is a one-of-a-kind piece — a watch in a glove woven from 3d-printed rose-gold mesh. Cutting-edge technology has been paired with clockwork mechanics conceived in the middle of the last century!
Nearly 1600 diamonds have been used to decorate the mitten and dial. Its centerpiece is the watch's precious pavé dial. The process of decorating and assembling the watch took the watchmakers at Cartier no less than 227 hours.
