As the flagship model turns thirty, the Saxon manufacture is introducing four new editions.
A major event for the entire watch industry took place on October 24, 1994. It was four years after A. Lange & Söhne was relaunched as a company, when the brand unveiled its first four inaugural models.
Thirty years on, it's probably safe to say that the most prominent of those four models was the Lange 1 — the watch that encapsulated the revived Saxon manufacture's core DNA. A dream team worked to create the model, including Reinhard Meis and Kurt Klaus.
The resulting watch saw the light of day with an outsize date, power reserve indication, and two off-centered subdials: one for the hours and minutes and another separate one for the second hand. Exactly thirty years have passed since the triumphant debut of the Lange 1 (the foundational collection of 123 pieces sold out within minutes).
A. Lange & Söhne are marking the anniversary with two versions of the Lange 1 that double up with another two editions in smaller case sizes called the Little Lange 1. Cases for the Lange 1 versions measure 38.5 mm × 10 mm, compared to 36.8 mm × 9.8 mm for the Little Lange 1.
Both versions are limited editions (300 for each configuration of the Lange 1 and 150 pieces for each configuration of the Little Lange 1). There's a rose-gold version with a galvanized blue silver dial, and a second version in platinum with a black onyx dial on a silver base.
The first Lange 1 from 1994 was released in yellow-gold with the enduring case size of 38.5 mm in diameter. It had a solid caseback, which the company remedied a year later. The Lange 1 for 2024 isn't afraid to show what it's made of.
Moreover, A. Lange & Söhne's mastery of decorating the movement's components is on par with fine art. All of the novelties are equipped with the company's 50th manufacture movement introduced in 2015: L121.1.
This manually wound caliber uses a shock-resistant balance with eccentric poising weights and Lange's proprietary freely oscillating balance spring. The balance and spring are installed beneath a hand-engraved balance cock. The mainspring barrel provides a 72-hour power reserve.
