A traditional complication you can dive with.

Angelus is a company which has never specialized in dive watches itself, although fans of iconic dive models are bound to have heard the name before. In 1955, Angelus was the company whose caliber SF240 with an eight-day power reserve was chosen by Panerai to equip models with small seconds at 9 o'clock used by the Italian Navy.

By the way, Panerai released a PAM 203 tribute model in 2005 limited to a 150-piece series of models which housed the historic SF240 movement, although some experts debate how original it was. Apart from that, the Angelus SF215 with a 45-minute counter was used in the Radiomir Mare Nostrum chronograph.

Since the brand was relaunched in 2015, the company has been making watches with cases water-resistant to 300 meters, and has placed its bets on openworked movements. The new limited edition 25-piece Angelus U53 Diver Tourbillon is no exception.

The tourbillon is what sets this watch apart, a complication which is rarely used in dive watches. The combination of diver specs with this prestigious complication has been done before in the world of watchmaking, although you can essentially count the examples on one hand.

Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms Tourbillon 8 Jours, the Easy Diver Tourbillon by Roger Dubuis in its case with pointy corners, the steampunk styled Strom Nethuns II Diving Tourbillon, and far-out examples like the Longio 1000m Diving Tourbillon from Hong Kong. Angelus is now the world's top supplier of tourbillon divers.

The brand already has the U50 Diver Tourbillon and U51 Diver Tourbillon to its name. The U53 is the line's latest addition. The model is equipped with the openworked Angelus A-300 movement with accentuated skeletonized bridges.

It measures 32.8 mm in diameter and 4.3 mm in height. Its mainspring barrel can be viewed at 1 o'clock, the winding mechanism is positioned at 4 o'clock, the flying tourbillon is between 6 and 7 o'clock, while a place has been reserved for the small seconds between 9 and 10 o'clock. The Angelus A-300 has a power reserve of 60 hours.

Apart from the helium valve at 9 o'clock and double screw-down guarded crowns which are key features for dive watches, the U53 also has a rotating diving bezel with 60-minute scale. The flange is adjusted using the crown at 2 o'clock.

This element is in khaki green, as are both of the straps the watch comes with (rubber and NATO textile). The chunky 46 mm case of the Angelus U53 Diver Tourbillon is made of lightweight titanium — the same material that was used to make the 45 mm cases for the U50 and U51.
