Stone dials gain more ground this year.
These watches used to be consigned to the 1970s archives of companies with a rich history, but many watchmakers have introduced stone experiments in 2024. One of the most popular choices is malachite.
Malachite dials have appeared in the lines of Frederique Constant, Jacob & Co., Formex and Alexander Shorokhoff. Now Cyrus Genève has been added to the list. Only this brand has used malachite in a completely different way to its competitors.
The tourbillon and arched vertical bridge that play the star roles in the movement remain central on this new version of the Klepcys Vertical Tourbillon. The tourbillon carriage is set on a vertical axis at a 90° angle.
In this position, it's almost constantly kept vertical, which has a positive effect on timekeeping accuracy. The movement's bridge that rises up in the center of the dial is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci self-supporting arched bridges.
These components will be familiar to fans of Cyrus Genève and Jean-François Mojon's creations — the man behind the CYR625 movement. A watch debuted with this construction in 2018, and the first version with a skeletonized movement appeared just a year later.
The same openworked caliber is housed in the new Klepcys Vertical Skeleton Tourbillon Malachite. So where is the malachite? The openworked movement leaves very little room for it.
The green stone has been used for the tracks that display the retrograde hour and minute indications on either side of the bridge. There's another indication set in the upper half of the bridge: a sphere that keeps track of the four-day power reserve.
It's accumulated by two parallel barrels that have lacquered ratchet-wheels adorned with the brand's propeller-like logo, which can be viewed thanks to the transparent caseback.
Two crowns are used for making corrections: one for adjusting the hands and winding the movement, and another with an integrated pusher for quick time correction in one-hour increments.
The movement is housed in a rose-gold case that measures 44 mm in diameter. Availability of the model is limited to an ultra-exclusive mini two-piece series.
