Two new versions of the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar celebrate the Hollywood blockbuster.
The company IWC unveiled the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month at SIHH in 2013, back when the Salon was still an event in the watch industry's calendar.
The model housed a movement which displayed the day, month, and leap year using disks under the dial. A year later, this complication left the Ingenieur collection Gérald Genta once worked on, and found a new home in the Aquatimer collection.
The perpetual calendar looked fairly extravagant when it appeared in a dive watch, but the model survived a number of further transformations over the years. In 2017, the Aquatimer's 50th anniversary was marked with the launch of the Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month in a new material called Ceratanium.
Everyone is already familiar with Ceratanium by now, as the watch makes a comeback in this case material for 2023. The manufacture has introduced two new watch versions which are actually inspired by their own models made as props to be worn in the movie "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom".
They've borrowed the black case on a black strap with bright accents from the watches made for villains Black Manta and Dr. Stephen Shin: blue (Ref. IW379406) or red (Ref. IW379405), depending on the version.
You have to admit that the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month in its 49-mm case really does look like a watch you could picture on a superhero's wrist in the Marvel Universe. Ceratanium is also well up to the serious challenges that could arise in a showdown between adversaries Black Manta and Aquaman.
This material is a forged titanium alloy with a heat-treated surface that acquires properties similar to ceramic in terms of hardness and scratch resistance.
The watch uses a combination of an internal and external bezel. At IWC, they believe that the internal bezel enhances legibility, while the external rotating bezel is easier to use.
The watch, which is water-resistant to 100 meters, uses the IWC SafeDive system designed to prevent the external bezel from rotating clockwise and unintentionally changing the dive time.
The Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month is equipped with a manufacture IWC 89802 movement. Apart from the calendar, it also offers the functionality of a chronograph with a combined display for hours and minutes in a totalizer at 12 o’clock.
