Buy a ticket and hope you get lucky.
Breguet's subscription watch, Czapek revival through crowdfunding, and the famous Rolex waiting lists — there are many ways to acquire a watch besides typical boutique purchases. Maximilian Büsser's M.A.D. 1 project uses another original method.
Büsser's watches are raffled off, although would-be winners still need to make a payment. Only those who purchase a ticket are in with a chance of winning the watch.
That's how the brand is combatting gray market dealers and making their watches accessible to all consumers, regardless of who places their order first. But ticket holders will certainly need to have luck on their side.
Büsser has dedicated the M.A.D. 1 editions to the watch community which has formed around the MB&F brand. The watchmaker presented the first noticeably cheaper model with designer MB&F elements in 2021. The first member of the series cost 1,900 Swiss francs — a bargain compared to the tens of thousands on price tags for the brand's regular watches.
The first watch didn't retail and wasn't even raffled off. It was made exclusively for MB&F’s suppliers, "the Friends”, and members of "The Tribe”, whose members include the names behind the abbreviation MB&F, as well as watchmakers, journalists, and distributors. Subsequent M.A.D. 1 editions became more accessible to the wider market in raffles. You need to purchase a ticket on the project's website and wait.
The same method has been used for the new M.A.D.1 Green watch series, which has become more expensive at 2,900 Swiss francs. The main highlight here is the upside-down movement — a nod to the approach taken by MB&F for their HM3 and HM8 models.
The only difference here is that the M.A.D.1 isn't a signature movement created from scratch, it's a reworked Miyota 8315 with the rotor on top. The rotor on this model is in the shape of a triple-blade battle ax.
Seeing as the movement occupies the dial, timekeeping indications have been shifted to the side of the case. Time is displayed laterally by rotating hour and minute cylinders made of an aluminum alloy.
The numerals engraved on them are filled with Super-LumiNova. Luminescent highlights have also been added to the rotor. The movement has a power reserve of 60 hours.
M.A.D.1 Green has a case made of stainless steel. The 42-mm case is seriously thick at 18.8 mm, which ensures that the indications are clearly visible.
