The limited edition is a perfect fusion of 17th-century horological artistry and 21st-century watchmaking.

In 2001, under the leadership of Rolf W. Schnyder, Ulysse Nardin disrupted traditional watchmaking with the launch of the Freak – a revolutionary watch with no hands, no dial, and no crown.

A decade later, the brand acquired Donzé Cadrans, a dial manufacturer and enamel specialist known for mastering traditional techniques such as Grand Feu, cloisonné, champlevé, and flinqué. In 2025, these two legacies come together: the avant-garde design of the Freak now meets the centuries-old tradition of enamel artistry.

In fact, Ulysse Nardin has collaborated with Donzé Cadrans since the 1980s – this is the same workshop that produced the miniature-painted dials of the iconic San Marco series.

Today, Donzé continues to fulfill select external commissions, producing around 1,200 dials per year, while also supplying artisanal enamel work for Ulysse Nardin’s own Classico Manufacture and creative special editions.

For the Freak X Gold Enamel, artisans applied enamel onto a disk made of 22-carat rose gold (composed of 91.7% gold and 8.3% copper), a carefully chosen alloy capable of withstanding repeated firing during the enameling process.

The result is a spectacular flinqué enamel dial for the Freak X Gold Enamel – where translucent enamel is layered over a hand-engraved guilloché pattern. While enamel dials have appeared on previous Freak X models – including exclusive editions for Bucherer and Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons – this new release introduces a bold combination of blue PVD-coated titanium and 18-carat rose gold side inserts.

The case measures 43 mm in diameter and 13.38 mm in thickness. To complement the titanium and gold construction, the watch is paired with a blue alligator leather strap, offering a more refined alternative to the textured rubber straps used in previous retailer editions. Inside beats the UN-230 manufacture calibre, an automatic movement that upholds the Freak’s radical spirit.

The signature flying carousel forms the minute hand itself, while the regulating system – featuring a silicon escapement, hairspring, and balance wheel – is fully developed in-house at Sigatec, Ulysse Nardin’s own silicon technology lab. The Freak X Gold Enamel is a limited edition of 120 pieces, uniting centuries of craftsmanship in a modern masterpiece.
