Omega Waterproof Watches Gone Deeper
Performance specs for waterproof cases have long transcended the realm of practicality, they’ve become an excuse for showing off new records.
Professional divers are more likely to use specialized equipment rather than watches made by historic Swiss manufacturers. Most fans of luxury watches are probably not crazy about underwater diving, and even less likely to want to plunge to extreme depths.
Nevertheless, companies didn't stop striving to dive deeper having crossed the traditional threshold of 200-300 meters, even if it was more than enough. Omega's spring novelty has gone even deeper, plummeting to 6,000 meters in one steep drop.
Omega Seamaster Waterproof Watch
The specs boasted by the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep series are a first for Omega's commercial pieces, leaving rivals from the same line such as the Omega Ploprof Seamaster 600 and Seamaster 1000 trailing far behind.
The main model in the record-breaking line is the Ultra Deep in a case measuring 45.5 mm, forged from sandblasted grade-five titanium. Its look is completed by a black dial made of ceramized titanium, encircled by a brushed ceramic bezel with its diving scale made of a material called Liquidmetal.
The Omega waterproof watch is paired with a black and cyan NATO strap. The on-trend strap is made from polyamide yarn sourced from 100% recycled fishing nets. The titanium flagship model heads the Ultra Deep range of models, where Omega has also used a new material called O-Megasteel.
The company has successfully experimented with gold in the past. It has Sedna gold based on rose gold, along with the white-gold Canopus and yellow-gold Moonshine alloys under its belt. Now the brand has turned to steel. The detailed characteristics and ingredients used to create O-Megasteel are being kept under wraps.
All that's known is the steel alloy is distinct for its increased resistance to corrosion, brighter tone and unique shine. The selection of dial colors set off the material's aesthetic characteristics to the fullest. There are variations of the steel Ultra Deep with a white dial and gradient color transitions from gray to black or blue to black with a lacquered finishing.
Each model is presented on a rubber strap or bracelet made of O-Megasteel./ All diver models are equipped with the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8912 — a METAS-certified movement. It has a 60-hour power reserve, a Si14 silicon balance spring, co-axial escapement, two winding barrels mounted in series, and can withstand magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss.
